Types of Safety Features in cars

Usually people dont know what they are dealing with when they are buying new cars and are not familiar with the new safety features and technologies the cars have now a days. Due to which people end up buying the cheaper cars or the cheaper trims of a car that automotive companies offer with each car that does not provide some essential safety features. These Safety features come with an extra cost but they do help a lot in saving your lives if you some how end up in a car Accident which i hope you dont. Now a day some people are not familiar with the new Safety technologies except the Airbags, Of Course :P For example some of my friends Didn't even knew what ABS and EBD is or what it meant.
So i am posting this so that i could help you out or let you what you missed out in you car by buying a cheaper car or trim. So if  you value your life dont bail on these Features and check them out they are listed below

Safety Features

Safety comes first

Anti Lock Braking system (ABS)

The ABS might not seem important to some people but it plays a wide role in saving you from a car accident. What it basically does is that when you suddenly fully apply the brakes of your car in panic to avoid collision, the ABS helps your car from not sliding, skidding or drifting and making the braking distance short providing you with better traction and control over your car. There are no guarantees that it will avoid the crash but it does helps you out surviving it.
There are many types of ABS too like 4 channel 4 sensor ABS, 2 channel 2 sensor ABS etc. So basically what you need to know is that the more the sensors and channels, the better the braking system.

Types of Anti Lock Braking system (ABS)

Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)

The name almost explains everything :P so what EBD basically does is that it distributes the braking force among all the wheels depending on the conditions like speed, weight, road condition. Which in turn helps the car with making the braking distance shot and prevents the car from sliding or skidding in panic braking.

Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) or (BA)

What EBA does is that it detects if you are applying the brakes in panic to avoid collision by calculating the speed and force applied on brakes and helps you out by giving extra braking force to the wheels making the braking distance shorter by 20 percent.

AirBags

Airbags are the inflatable air balloons that pop up in a fraction of a second from different dimension of the car like doors, dashboard, steering wheel etc in a car crash. Air bags help greatly in saving the passengers and car driver in car crash.

Most of you must be familiar with the airbags but thats not all to it. Mostly the cars come with 2 to 4 air bags which is not enough for Safety because collisions can happens from each an every side in a car crash. What you need to know is that the more the air bags the better the safety and there are cars available now a days with 8 to 10 airbags which include side airbags, rollover airbags, Knee airbags, frontal and passenger airbags.

Stuff you should know about Air bags

  • The are bags are basically designed to work with the seat belts so it does not mean that if you have airbags in your car you dont need to wear the Seat Belts because seat belts provide distance between you and airbags to give you maximum protection.
  • Airbags can be dangerous for the children under age 12 and could seriously injure and kill them which is why you should keep the children in the rear seat and never keep them rear faced in the front seat.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

This System Detects the lanes on the roads with sensors and warns the driver with visual, audible and vibration warnings if the car leaves the lane unless the turning indicator is on.

Lane Assist System or Lane Keeping System

This System Detects the lanes on the roads with sensors and warns the driver with visual, audible and vibration warnings if the car leaves the lane unless the turning indicator is on and if no action is taken to keep the car inside the lane the Lane assist system automatically moves the car inside the lane or prevents it from leaving it. The Lane Assist does it by applying gentle bakes on a single wheel or by direct steering input in case of electronic steering.

Automatic Braking system

Automatic braking system is a very high tech feature in cars and what it does is that it detects the vehicle, person and objects in front using the sensors, radar, infrared, ultrasonic or other technologies, and if the brakes are not manually applied the system automatically applies the brakes with the help of anti lock braking system like EBD or BA.

Daytime Running lights

This Safety feature Helps preventing crashes by making the car more visible to other drivers. It would sound like a useless feature but it helps a lot in avoiding involvement in daytime crashes and accidents.

Adaptive Headlights

Adaptive Headlights help the driver a lot at night when the visibility is less and it is difficult to see around the corners or to see further on curvy roads. The adaptive head lights turn the lights with the direction of the vehicle and they also change the length and height of the light when need.

Electronic Stability Control

Electronic Stability control is a system that helps the driver out under different steering circumstances by detecting loss of traction and provides better steering, handling and control over the vehicle by applying gentle brake on one wheel of the vehicle. For example if the vehicle is over steer the system will automatically apply brake on outer front wheel to steer the vehicle back in and hence helps the driver by moving the vehicle where the the driver intends to take it.

Traction Control

A traction control maintains the traction between the tires and the road by sensing road conditions For example if the road is wet, to avoid spinning of tyres the traction control will adjust the power output to maintain better traction for the vehicle and avoid slippage.

Pre Crash Safety Systems

Different vehicle companies have different Pre Crash Safety systems. What it basically does is that it detects the crash before happening and initiates the pre crash safety system.  For Example some of the unlock the doors, switch off the engine, cut the power from the battery, disable fuel systems etc.

SeatBelts

In the end i would say that the most important Safety feature in a car is the seat belt. If you dont wear one, start wearing it now because if you value your life you should wear it. Because nobody can save someone who does not want to be saved.
