Hummer was basically started due to the increasing fame among civilians because of the Gulf war. People became fond of Humvee by watching its unique Off road Skills in Gulf war. Original Humvee was a light armored vehicle designed by AM General that met all Army contract specifications to transport small groups of American soldiers with all military requirements.

Humvee

Humvee comes from a military term HMMWV which Stands for High Mobility Multipurpose wheeled Vehicle. It is an armored beast built to survive the worse and toughest conditions in a war ensuring the safety of  passengers or soldiers. The vehicle was also know as the "Jeep On Steroids"

The Military Humvee has 16 inch ground clearance and is capable of climbing 60 percent incline and was able to transverse 40 percent slope. The Humvee has all water proof electronics so that it could dive through 2.5 feet of water. The Car is much wider (7 ft 1 inch) and heavier than a normal jeep and has a curb weight of  5200 to 5900 lbs and was able to carry 2500 lbs of payload. The M1165 Humvee can carry a payload of 6820 lbs.
The Military Humvee has a V8 Diesel 6.2 liter or V8 Diesel turbo engine capable of 150 horse power at 3500 rpm with 3 or 4 speed automatic transmissions.
 The Humvee has a top speed of 70 mph or 113 km/h and can travel with the max gross weight at the speed of 55 mph. The Humvee also has Disk brakes on all 4 wheels and independent suspension for each wheel. The most amazing feature in Humvee is the Central tire inflation system (CTIS) that can change the Air pressure of all the tires of Humvee with a push of a button so that the car is able to drive through rocky or soft surface with lower tire pressures and at high tire pressure through flat hard surfaces.
The most Unique fact about Humvee is that it can also easily transported through AIR and dropped through low altitude parachutes. In tougher conditions the Humvee can be deliver through the rear ramp of the plane at very low altitudes just above the ground without Landing the plane. And since the Humvee is a military vehicle, it has almost 17 different variants  up till now.

Cost

The Unarmored Humvee costs 65000 US $ while the armored Humvee is much more expensive and has a cost of 140000 US $ and 281000 units of Humvee have been built up till now.
